History:

Thai massage is one of the world’s oldest healing modalities. It has it’s roots in Indian Ayurvedic  Medicine .  It originated during the Buddha’s lifetime, over 2500 years ago and was brought to this world by a saint “ The Father, Doctor Shivago Komarpahj”, who was said to have been the Buddha’s personal physician.  The Buddhist monks traveled to Southeast Asia and were accompanied by Ayurvedic doctors who performed a  form of healing art and would later be transformed into Thai Yoga Massage.  Thai massage is also known as “Nuad  Bo Rarn”.  Nuad means to touch with intention and Bo Rarn means something that is sacred and revered.  The Thai people saw illness as an imbalance in the mind, body and spirit and they would seek help at the local temples called “Wats”, where Thai massage would be performed by the Buddhists monks.  There were 4 elements of traditional Thai medicine which included:

  1. Nutritional counseling ( focus is on diet )
  2. Herbs ( internally and externally )
  3. Spiritual counseling ( primarily meditation and the Buddhist principles)
  4. Thai Yoga Massage

How it is performed:

Thai massage techniques are applied with a slow and mindful approach.  The goal of the work is to achieve balance in the client’s energy lines or “Sens”, which are the subtle electromagnetic energy pathway’s and is the Ayurvedic Way to healthy function.

Stimulation of the “Sens” through this level can affect organs and bring about changes on a physical, emotional and mental level. It consists of the practitioner applying gentle pressure using their own body weight with their hands, forearms, feet and elbows to the client’s fully clothed body.  The feet and hands are also treated with reflexology and acupressure points, while also performing passive assisted stretches to the client.  This full body massage is uniquely relaxing as well as energizing.  The rhythmic, soothing rocking and fluidity of the massage allows both the practitioner and client to experience a state of meditation.

What to expect:

The client wears loose comfortable clothing and is lying on a cushioned floor mat.  The practitioner is using their own body weight to apply the techniques so it becomes a form of toning exercise both the giver and receiver.  Breathing is one of the key components of Thai Yoga Massage.  The practitioner practices Yogi breathing while performing the massage and the client ends up mimicking the breathing pattern of the giver which in return enables them both to experience a form of rhythmic meditative dance.
